Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has received policy approval from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to run PhD programmes.
The approval paves the way for KsTU to launch its inaugural PhD programme in Applied Statistics and other programmes. This milestone underscores the university’s dedication to addressing the evolving needs of various sectors and industries by producing highly skilled professionals.
In addition to the PhD in Applied Statistics, KsTU has submitted applications for consideration to introduce six other doctoral programmes. These include a PhD in a Built Environment and a Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng) programme in Civil Engineering, offering specializations in Construction Engineering Management, Structures, Road and Highway Engineering, as well as Water and Environmental Engineering. Furthermore, a Doctor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering is also under review.
The decision to expand its postgraduate programmes aligns with KsTU’s vision to empower individuals through quality education and research. The introduction of these programmes aims to equip students with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address real-world challenges in their respective fields.
Dr. Samuel Mensah, Vice Chancellor of KsTU, expressed his enthusiasm about the new initiatives, stating, “We are excited to embark on this journey of academic excellence. These PhD programmes will not only enhance the university’s academic profile but also contribute to the socio-economic development of our nation.”
Following the policy approval, the university awaits further assessment from GTEC, which will evaluate staffing and facilities to ensure readiness for the rollout of the PhD programmes. Once launched, these programmes will be open to both local and international applicants, reflecting KsTU’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity in higher education.
As KsTU prepares to usher in this new phase of academic advancement, it remains dedicated to its mission of producing highly skilled graduates equipped to meet the demands of an ever-changing global landscape.
ABOUT KsTU
Kumasi Technical University has a rich history dating back to 1954 when it was founded as Kumasi Technical Institute (K.T.I). Initially, its focus was on providing education in craft courses. Over time, it evolved, and by 1963, it transitioned into a non-tertiary Polytechnic under the Ghana Education Service. This transition allowed the institute to expand its offerings to include technician diplomas and other sub-professional courses.
In 1992, a significant milestone occurred with the passing of the Polytechnic Law (PNDC L.321). This legislation elevated the status of the institution to that of a tertiary institution. As a result, Kumasi Technical Polytechnic was tasked with producing high-caliber skilled manpower in areas such as manufacturing, commerce, science, and technology. During this phase, it gained recognition as one of the prominent and dynamic Polytechnics in Ghana.
Fast forward to 2016, and another transformative change took place with the enactment of the Technical University Act (Act 922). This legislation converted Kumasi Polytechnic into the present-day Kumasi Technical University. The primary objective of this conversion was to offer higher education programs in engineering, applied arts, science, technology-based disciplines, as well as technical and vocational training.
Notably, Kumasi Technical University is situated in a picturesque location at the heart of Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region in Ghana. Over the years, it has emerged as a crucial center for training not only for Ghana but also for other African countries.
The university also provides various academic and administrative services through its quick links, including admissions portal, email services, library catalog, and virtual classroom system. It also boasts several faculties, such as the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Graduate School, among others.
