Every senior high school has the objective of training its students to excel in various facets of life. It must be noted that senior high schools shape the academic life of students and their spiritual life as well – like the case of seminary schools.
Schools, in general, are known to be one of the important agents of socialization, and students meet several people from diverse backgrounds and learn different behaviors, consciously or unconsciously.

1. St. Augustine’s College
St. Augustine’s College is one of Ghana’s most stubborn senior high schools. St. Augustine’s College is an all-male academic institution in Cape Coast, Ghana. The school started at Amissano, a village near Elmina, in 1930.
The Roman Catholic institution was established to serve as a training college and seminary. The school was named after St. Augustine of Hippo (354 – 430 AD).
The college’s motto is Omnia Vincit Labor, meaning “Perseverance conquers All.”The school has a total of 11 houses.
On 6 August 1933, the Roman Catholic Church and the Bishop of Cape Coast Vicariate Monsignor W. T. Porter felt the need to have a separate Roman Catholic school. Cape Coast was found to be the most suitable location.
A commemorative foundation stone was laid in late 1935 at the present site. Fr. Maurice B. Kelly, the Dean of the Training College at Amissano, now St. Teresa’s Seminary Amisano, became the first Head Dean or Headmaster.
2. St. John’s School
St. John’s School is an all-boys second-cycle Roman Catholic school located at Sekondi in the Western Region of Ghana. It is one of the best senior high schools in Ghana and the best in the region.
The present curriculum falls within the Senior High School system in Ghana, with overall oversight by the Ghana Education Service. Old Boys of St. John’s School are affectionately called Old Saints, and the Old Saints Fraternity includes some of the most notable and prominent men.
Old boys include award-winning Ghanaian journalist, communications expert, and social entrepreneur David Ampofo, Dr. Frank Abu, former minister of Mines and Energy, former Chief Executive of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Dr. Felix Anyah, M.K Onnomah, Ghanaian Politician and the late Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, Shasha Marley and a whole group of prominent and notable alumni.
3. Accra Academy
The Accra Academy is one of the foremost secondary educational institutions in Ghana. It operates as a non-denominational day and boarding boys’ school, located at Bubuashie, near Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region. It was the first private academy to be established on the Gold Coast.
The academy runs courses in business, general science, general arts, agricultural science, and visual arts, leading to a West African Senior School Certificate.
The academy’s founders provided tuition to students who wanted a secondary-grade education but who did not have financial support to enable them to do so.
Dr. Kofi Konuah periodically traveled to some of the major towns in each region of the country to organize entrance examinations for students to offer the brilliant but needy among them education opportunities at Accra Academy.
The academy does not offer special admission to brilliant but needy students. As per a 2005 directive from the Ghana Education Service, it admits its students through a school selection placement system.
4. St. Paul’s College
St. Paul’s Senior High School or St. Paul’s Boys College, formerly St. Paul’s Secondary, is a Ghanaian boys’ senior high school located at Hatsukope-Denu in the Ketu South Municipal District of the Volta Region.
Established in 1958, it is a Catholic school part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Keta–Akatsi and has a minor seminary attached to it.
The school has the nickname SPACO derived from its name; however, the alumni (the old students’ union) call themselves Conquerors after the school motto, (‘Do good and conquer evil Vince In Bono Malum’).
In 2000 the school was made a mixed school to promote girl-child education in the Volta Region. After the first batch was completed, the school was turned again into a boys’ school and has remained a boys’ school.
5. Kumasi Technical Institute
Kumasi Technical Institute is a co-educational second-cycle technical school in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The school was established in 1976 with support from the government of Ghana.
In 2009, for instance, at least twelve students sustained varying degrees of injuries after final-year students of Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) staged a violent demonstration on the institute’s campus on Sunday evening.
The students were protesting what they described as an attack on a final-year student of the school by a teacher for wearing a ‘non-prescribed’ uniform.
6. Opoku Ware School
Opoku Ware School, often referred to as OWASS, is a senior high school for boys in the Ashanti region of Ghana. It was established in 1952 as one of the five Catholic schools in Ghana. The school was named after Asante King Opoku Ware I.
The students are known collectively as Akatakyie, an Asante word meaning “conquering heroes.”
It is located in Fankyenebra, near Santasi, along the Kumasi-Obuasi road.
The patron saint of the school is Saint Thomas Aquinas. The school’s motto is “Deus Lux Scientiae,” meaning “God is the Light of Knowledge.”

Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (formerly St John’s Seminary and College, nicknamed POJOSS) is an all-boys boarding school located at Effiduase, Koforidua, in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
It was established in 1958 by Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers SVD as a Catholic seminary for boys who wished to become priests.
Students are offered general arts, general science, business, and visual arts to pursue.
After their stay in the school, they sit an external examination called the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to be placed in any of the tertiary institutions in the country.

Obuasi Senior High Technical School is a co-educational second-cycle public high school institution in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana and it’s known to be one of the most stubborn SHS in Ghana. The school recently reached the quarter-finals of the National Science and Maths Quiz Competition.
They won the Ashanti regional Milo soccer competition in 2005 and 2015.
In the Zonal Inter Colleges Athletics competition, they won several times. Students of the school were claimed to have created a touchless bin’ in the fight against COVID-19. Also was the first school to win the maiden Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge in 2021.

Adisadel College, popularly known as “ADISCO,” is an Anglican boys’ boarding school in Cape Coast, Ghana.
