GES Pilots New SHS Curriculum in 33 Schools
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has started a trial process of the new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum in 33 schools nationwide.
According to report, the curriculum development was guided by the Education Strategic Plan, which also influenced the creation of the National Pre-Tertiary Education Curriculum Framework and the National Pre-Tertiary Learning Assessment Framework. These frameworks collectively shaped the new SHS, Secondary High Technical School (SHTS), and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum.
Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Director General of GES, announced that following the pilot phase, the curriculum would be rolled out in all schools starting in the 2024/2025 academic year. He highlighted that the curriculum’s integration of climate change and green economy issues aims to foster a strong interest in environmental topics among students, ultimately benefiting the planet.
A survey by UNESCO found that while 95% of primary and secondary teachers recognize the importance of teaching climate change, only 30% feel equipped to do so. This highlights the need for improved teacher training in this area.
Hajia Samira Bawumia, wife of the Vice President and chair of the Africa Women and Children Conference, emphasized the urgency of closing the knowledge gap in climate studies. She pointed out that activities like tree planting not only help restore forests but also educate young people about environmental conservation. She underscored that education is crucial for equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge for protecting the environment.
Other speakers at the Green Ghana Day event and the launch of the African Students for Climate Action initiative stressed the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s forest reserves and environment. Ophelia Hayford, the Minister for Environment, Science, and Innovation, reiterated her ministry’s dedication to policies that ensure environmental safety.
To commemorate the 2024 Green Ghana Day, dignitaries planted trees at Labone Senior High School’s garden. This event marked a significant step towards promoting environmental awareness and action among Ghana’s youth.
