Vitting SHS student mercilessly caned for leaving dormitory late.

The news and pictures showing how a student of Vitting SHS has been mercilessly caned and abused for leaving the dormitory late have caused many on social media to question the logic behind the use of canes in schools when the caning has been banned by the GES.

While the GES has continuously kicked against the use of cane in schools, there are many senior high schools where cane is used to inflict wounds on learners in the name of correcting them. Many schools, that intended to use the cane as a pointing device, have transformed it into an abusive tool, causing learners to endure pain and molestation in silence.

The latest school to hit the internet for turning the cane into a weapon of abuse is Vitting Senior High, where a teacher used the cane to mercilessly whip a male student until his blood started to ooze out of his back from the marks left on his body.

According to our sources, the victim left the dormitory late, hence the punishment.

Vitting Senior High School is located in Tamale.

The question that needs to be asked is whether the punishment meted out to the student is the prescribed correcting mechanism the GES has prescribed for teachers who are expected to be professional in their work.

If a teacher decides to cane a student this way until blood oozes out and clots on his body, the Ghana Education Service must not play its old game of saying it is investigating the story only for this crime to go unpunished.

Anoye Adjei SHS students experienced a similar incident in 2022 when they left their dormitory late for church service on Mother’s Day.

While there is no objection to correcting learners, it is crucial for teachers and school authorities to distinguish between corrective actions and abuse of learners within their official duties. The GES recently released a code of conduct and guidelines for both learners and schools. However, it does not prescribe the abusive use of the can to students, as if they were slaves or thieves.

The Human Rights Reporters Ghana must also take action on this matter and ensure that the GES comes clean on such matters.

The misuse of canes in schools is becoming a canker, and teachers need to wake up to the reality. The big question is, is this how the teacher corrects his children and younger siblings at home?

The law must bite this teacher deep and wide to serve as a deterrent for like-minded educators in our schools and classrooms.
